Division Directors in Focus : Division B Director Corville Hylton

Take a read of the interview held with Division B Director- Corville Hylton

“If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain”.

This is the guiding philosophy of Division Director Corville Hylton.

It was by mere chance that Division Director Hylton joined Toastmasters. On the programme Division Directors in Focus, he told of being encouraged to join Toastmasters by a friend who took him along with her wherever she went. He moved from sitting at the back of the room at his first Toastmasters meeting to leading District 81, Division B as its Division Director for the 2021-2022 term.

Division Director Hylton has been a Toastmaster for nine years having joined the Bermuda Toastmasters Club in October 2012 and has served on almost every executive position in the club. His service includes the following:

· Sergeant at Arms: 2013-2014

· Vice President Education: 2014-2015

· President: 2015-2016 and 2020-2021

· Secretary: 2017-2018

· Vice President Membership: 2018-2019

In 2019-2020, Division Director Hylton facilitated a Gavel Club at a school, conducted a Speech Craft Programme and an online Youth Leadership Programme.

In his continuing quest to develop his communication and leadership skills, he went on to serve as Assistant Division Director Club Growth for District 81, Division B which saw him supporting 38 Toastmasters clubs in Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Grand Turk Island.

His record of service has shown without a doubt that he is very passionate about the Toastmasters Programme and was nominated Toastmaster of the Year for 2014. He achieved the Distinguished Toastmaster designation not once but twice, first on May 28, 2015 under the Legacy Program and on June 30, 2020 under the new Pathways Program.

No stranger to the limelight, probably as a result of being a Toastmaster, Division Director Hylton has taken up speaking opportunities inside and outside of Bermuda. He has appeared on local TV and Radio as well as Live Stream and YouTube. He has conducted Public Speaking seminars in many private and public organizations across Bermuda.

For this very experienced Toastmaster, serving in a leadership position in the District is an opportunity to gain even more experience and give back. Division Director Hylton sees conflict resolution as one major transferable skill that he has learnt from his many leadership roles, given the many different personalities reflecting who we are as a people.

For him, his professional life and life as a Toastmaster complement each other and success is defined as seeing members achieve their goals. For this Toastmaster, Police Officer of 20 years and Peer Chaplain for the Bermuda Police, the ability to motivate members is the key leadership lesson that he has learnt during the pandemic. This lesson will remain with him post pandemic.
